To boost community healthcare services, 324 Community Health Promoters (CHPs) and 26 Community Health Assistants from Teso North Sub-County have received Buffalo bicycles to improve their mobility as they deliver essential health services.
At least 350 bicycles were distributed during the phase1 launch which will address challenges facing community health workers who serve approximately 100 households or more in their designated village units and some of whom have been forced to cover large distances on foot while carrying their tools, with some even spending their own money to meet service targets.
The bicycles are expected to enhance service delivery in the region particularly in referrals and managing malaria cases since currently the CHPs handle 70% of confirmed malaria cases across the county at household level, and therefore, the improved mobility is anticipated to further increase the effectiveness.
Teso North was selected as the pilot location due to its challenging terrain, with successful implementation expected to inform the planned countywide expansion of the program.
This initiative is the result of a successful collaboration between the Busia County Government's Department of Health and Sanitation and its partners, World Bicycle Relief (WBR) and Living Goods (LG).
