In a major political shake-up, President William Ruto has made sweeping changes to his Cabinet, including the dismissal of Public Service Cabinet Secretary (CS) Justin Muturi. The reshuffle, which was announced on Wednesday, marks a significant shift in Kenya's executive leadership.
In the latest changes, Ruto appointed Geoffrey Ruku as the new CS for Public Service, replacing Muturi, who had held the position since Ruto’s administration began in 2022. Additionally, Hannah Wendot has been nominated to the Ministry of Gender and Culture, signaling a shift in the government’s focus on gender-related issues.
Former Environment CS Aden Duale has been transferred to the Health Ministry, while Deborah Barasa, who previously served as CS for Health, has been moved to head the Ministry of Environment.
A statement from State House Spokesperson Hussein Mohamed explained the rationale behind the reshuffle, noting that the changes were part of ongoing efforts to ensure the Cabinet operates at full strength, in line with the Constitution. The statement also emphasized that the restructuring aims to strengthen the Cabinet's capacity to continue driving Kenya's socioeconomic transformation.
“These changes are intended to reinforce the government’s efforts in achieving sustainable development and ensuring effective service delivery,” the statement read.
The reshuffle comes at a time of heightened political activity as Ruto’s administration continues to face challenges related to governance, economic reforms, and public service delivery. Political observers are closely monitoring the reshuffle to gauge its impact on the government's agenda, especially in the critical areas of health, environment, and public service.
Muturi’s removal from the Cabinet follows growing speculation about his tenure and internal challenges within the Ministry of Public Service. As Ruto’s administration looks to streamline its leadership, further changes could be on the horizon.
Kenya's political landscape continues to evolve, and the reshuffle signals the President’s commitment to enhancing the effectiveness of his government.
