DAP-K Party Leader Eugene Wamalwa Urges CDF Kahariri to Stay Apolitical, Calls for Reversal of Nzoia Sugar Privatization Plan

DAP-K Party Leader, Eugene L. Wamalwa, has called on the Chief of Defence Forces (CDF), General Kahariri, to maintain political neutrality, urging him to stay clear of political matters and remain professional, impartial, and unbiased in his duties. Wamalwa's statement comes amid concerns that the CDF's involvement in political discourse could undermine the military's apolitical stance.

"The Chief of Defence Forces must refrain from engaging in politics. His role is to serve the country with professionalism and impartiality. We expect him to maintain his integrity and operate without any political bias," Wamalwa emphasized during a press briefing.

In his remarks, Wamalwa also took a strong stance on the government's plan to privatize Nzoia Sugar Factory under a 30-year lease agreement, proposed as part of a Public-Private Partnership (PPP). The DAP-K Party Leader called on President William Ruto to reconsider this controversial plan, arguing that the privatization of Nzoia Sugar, a critical economic asset for Western Kenya, would have severe negative consequences for the region.

Wamalwa stressed the importance of Nzoia Sugar as an economic cornerstone for the people of Western Kenya, urging the government to prioritize public participation and inclusive decision-making in the process. He called for a transparent consultation process that takes into account the interests of local communities, workers, and stakeholders.

"We cannot allow the government to make decisions behind closed doors that will have long-term negative effects on the livelihoods of thousands of families in Western Kenya. Instead of rushing into a 30-year sale by lease, we urge the President to cancel this plan and instead initiate a process of public participation," Wamalwa said. "Nzoia Sugar Factory is vital to the economic wellbeing of the region, and its future must be determined by the people who depend on it."

The DAP-K Party Leader's comments come as tensions continue to rise around the proposed sale, with several local leaders and stakeholders expressing concerns about the impact of privatization on employment, local economies, and the long-term sustainability of the factory.

As the debate on Nzoia Sugar's future continues to unfold, Wamalwa's call for a more inclusive and transparent process echoes growing calls for greater accountability and local involvement in the decision-making process. The issue remains a significant point of contention in Western Kenya, with many urging the government to reconsider the approach in favor of a more balanced and community-driven solution.
