In a strong statement, DAPK Deputy Party Leader George Natembeya has condemned the violent attack on Peter Salasya, the Member of Parliament for Mumias East constituency, which occurred at Nyayo Stadium. The attack was reportedly carried out by a group of unruly individuals, sparking widespread concern over the safety and security of political leaders in the country.
Natembeya termed the attack as a "blatant violation of the rule of law" and an affront to Kenya's democratic values. He emphasized that such acts of violence are incompatible with the principles enshrined in the Constitution of Kenya, 2010, which guarantees citizens fundamental rights and freedoms, including the freedom of expression and political association under Articles 33 and 38.
"This heinous act constitutes a grave violation of an individual’s right to freely support or oppose any political party or ideology without fear of intimidation or violence," Natembeya said. He further called for collective condemnation of actions that threaten the country’s democracy and undermine the principles of tolerance and peaceful coexistence.
In his appeal to all Kenyans, Natembeya urged citizens to respect the democratic rights of others, regardless of political affiliation. He expressed the need for the country to move beyond divisive ideologies and work together towards fostering healthy political discourse, unity, and national progress.
"I urge all Kenyans to respect and uphold the democratic rights of others, as provided for in our Constitution," he added. "We must strive for a Kenya where differences in political opinion do not breed hostility, but rather foster healthy debate and national progress."
The attack on Salasya has raised concerns over the rising levels of political violence in the country, highlighting the importance of upholding democratic values and ensuring the safety of all public leaders.
