In a continued effort to bolster the grassroots economy and create a conducive environment for businesses across the country, Deputy President Kithure Kindiki today inspected the ongoing construction of the Gikoe ESP Market in Mathioya Constituency, Murang'a County. The market is part of a broader initiative to complete more than 400 modern markets across Kenya, aimed at providing secure, decent, and efficient spaces for traders and customers alike.
The Gikoe ESP Market, which is currently at 80% completion, will offer hundreds of small-scale business owners a well-structured environment to conduct their trade. It will also include vital storage facilities designed to reduce wastage, enabling farmers to fetch better returns on their farm produce. This development is a significant step toward addressing challenges faced by smallholder farmers in the region.
Accompanied by local leaders including Members of Parliament Dr. Edwin Mugo (Mathioya), Peter Kihungi (Kangema), Betty Maina (Woman Representative, Murang'a County), Sabina Chege (Nominated MP), and Senator Veronica Maina, Deputy President Kindiki toured the ongoing works at the market and held discussions with traders and residents about the transformative potential of the project. The market is expected to play a central role in enhancing trade, improving livelihoods, and creating jobs within the community.
Speaking to the gathered crowd, Deputy President Kindiki emphasized the government's commitment to fostering an environment where small businesses can thrive. "These markets are not just infrastructure projects; they are tools for empowerment," Kindiki remarked. "Through such initiatives, we are laying the foundation for a robust economy, one that will uplift our farmers, traders, and all Kenyans at the grassroots level."
The market, once completed, will include modern amenities and sufficient space to accommodate various traders and ensure smoother business transactions. Additionally, the storage facilities will play a key role in curbing post-harvest losses, which have long been a significant challenge for farmers in the area.
Local traders expressed their appreciation for the ongoing work and voiced optimism about the future once the market is fully operational. "This market will provide us with a better environment to do business, and the storage facilities will help us avoid wastage," said one trader. "We believe this is a game-changer for us."
The government has committed to completing the remaining works on schedule and ensuring that the market, along with other similar projects across the country, will create lasting benefits for local economies. The Gikoe ESP Market, once completed, will be a shining example of the government's dedication to fostering inclusive growth and improving the livelihoods of ordinary Kenyans.
Deputy President Kindiki reaffirmed the government's dedication to accelerating such development projects, urging all stakeholders to work together to make the dream of a thriving grassroots economy a reality for all.
