The State Department for Diaspora Affairs, under the leadership of Principal Secretary (PS) Roseline Njogu, has successfully overseen the repatriation of 48 Kenyans who were stranded in Myanmar. The returnees landed at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) at 6 a.m. on Saturday aboard a Kenya Airways flight, with 77 more still awaiting rescue.

PS Njogu, who has been at the forefront of coordinating the evacuation, emphasized the government’s commitment to protecting its citizens abroad. The repatriation mission was a joint effort involving multiple agencies, with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Kenyan Embassy in Thailand playing a key role.

Kenyan Ambassador to Thailand, Lindsay Kiptiness, confirmed that the embassy facilitated the safe passage of the rescued individuals. The group was first received at the Friendship Bridge 2 on the Thailand-Myanmar border on Friday morning before being transported to Bangkok, where they boarded a Kenya Airways flight to Nairobi.

The PS reassured Kenyans that efforts are ongoing to facilitate the return of the remaining 77 individuals still stranded in Myanmar. She also urged Kenyans to exercise caution when seeking job opportunities abroad to avoid falling victim to human trafficking and exploitative schemes.

“This operation reflects our unwavering dedication to ensuring the safety and well-being of Kenyans abroad. We will continue working tirelessly to bring the remaining individuals home,” said PS Njogu.

The government remains committed to strengthening diaspora engagement and enhancing measures to protect Kenyan migrant workers from exploitation. Security and foreign affairs agencies are closely monitoring the situation to ensure a swift resolution for those still awaiting repatriation.
