Diaspora Technical Working Group Engages PS Njogu on Proposed Electoral Legislative Reforms

The Diaspora Technical Working Group (TWG) today held a crucial meeting with Principal Secretary (PS) for the State Department of Diaspora Affairs, Dr. Roseline Njogu, to discuss proposed electoral legislative reforms aimed at enhancing the participation of the Kenyan Diaspora in the country’s democratic processes.

The meeting was an opportunity for the TWG to share their insights and perspectives on the reforms, which are designed to strengthen the connection between Kenyans abroad and the country’s governance framework. The discussions follow a series of consultative meetings held by the TWG with various stakeholders, including political, legislative, and non-governmental entities, all focused on improving the role of the Diaspora in shaping Kenya’s democratic landscape.

PS Njogu reaffirmed the State Department’s commitment to working with relevant stakeholders to ensure the full integration of the Diaspora into national development and democratic participation. She emphasized the importance of creating structures that will allow Kenyans living abroad to actively engage in the country’s governance processes.

“The Diaspora plays a critical role in the development of Kenya, and it is essential that their involvement in our governance and democratic processes is not just encouraged but fully mainstreamed,” PS Njogu said. “We are dedicated to ensuring that the Kenyan Diaspora has a rightful place in shaping the future of our nation.”

The reforms discussed in today’s meeting are part of a broader effort to enhance the inclusion of the Diaspora in national decision-making processes, recognizing their significant contributions to the country’s economy and development. The PS noted that these legislative changes would enable a more active and direct participation of Kenyans abroad in electoral processes and governance.

The dialogue between the Diaspora TWG and the State Department continues to be a critical step towards ensuring the Diaspora’s voice is heard and valued in Kenya’s democratic journey.
