The Deputy Inspector General (DIG) of the Kenya Police Service, Mr. Eliud Lagat, today made his maiden visit to the headquarters of the Anti-Stock Theft Unit (ASTU) in Gilgil. The visit, which marked a significant moment for the unit, was warmly received by ASTU Commandant Mr. Joseph K. Limo, SAIG, and his Deputy Mr. Bernard Mbatha, AIG.
During his visit, DIG Lagat toured key sections of the ASTU headquarters, including the newly established ASTU purified drinking water shop, the officers’ mess, the renowned riding school, and the state-of-the-art ASTU shooting range. These facilities play a crucial role in supporting the unit’s daily operations and enhancing the officers’ overall welfare.
In his address, DIG Lagat commended the officers for their dedication and exemplary performance in the execution of their duties, highlighting the significance of ASTU’s work in ensuring security in the country. He also emphasized the critical role mental health plays in the lives of police officers, urging them to support each other and share challenges. “A problem shared is a problem half solved,” Lagat remarked, encouraging a supportive environment among the officers.
The visit was also an opportunity for DIG Lagat to congratulate the Commandant, Mr. Limo, SAIG, and other officers who have recently been promoted within the Service. His gesture highlighted the importance of acknowledging the hard work and progress of those who serve in the police force.
As the visit coincided with the Eid celebrations, DIG Lagat extended his heartfelt Eid Mubarak greetings to all Muslim faithful, wishing them peace, joy, and prosperity during the festive season.
The Anti-Stock Theft Unit, established in 1965, has long been a vital force in combating cattle rustling and securing Kenya’s pastoral communities. Over 3,000 officers are strategically deployed across the country to carry out the unit's mandate. In addition to tackling livestock theft, ASTU plays a key role in supporting other police operations, including crowd control during state functions, with its specialized Mounted Company Horse Riders.
DIG Lagat’s visit also included the presence of key police figures such as Mr. Ndung'u, SAIG, Director of Logistics, Kenya Police Service; Mr. Mathiu Kainga, AIG, Commandant of the National Police Leadership Academy; Madam Sarah Chumo, SSP, Regional Traffic Officer; Mr. C. J. Omanya, SSP, ASTU Staff Officer Personnel; and Mr. Wilstone Mwakio, SSP, Sub-County Police Commander, Gilgil.
The visit underscored the ongoing efforts to enhance the capabilities of the Anti-Stock Theft Unit and reinforce its commitment to ensuring the safety and security of Kenya’s citizens.
