The Deputy Inspector-General of the Kenya Police Service (DIG-KPS), Mr. Eliud Lagat, officially launched the National Police Service (NPS) County Commanders’ Strategic Leadership Course No. 1/2025 at the National Police Leadership Academy (NPLA) in Ngong today.
The comprehensive five-week training program has brought together 87 senior police commanders from various counties, police formations, and specialized units across the nation. The course is aimed at enhancing the participants' strategic leadership, decision-making skills, community policing, counter-terrorism awareness, and ethical leadership in law enforcement.
In his opening remarks, DIG Lagat, who was representing the Inspector General of Police, Mr. Douglas Kanja, underscored the significance of professionalism, integrity, and intelligence-driven policing in strengthening security throughout the country. He emphasized that the course would play a crucial role in aligning with the National Police Service Strategic Plan (2023–2027), which focuses on equipping officers with the necessary tools to address emerging security challenges and build stronger relationships with local communities.
"The leadership course is designed to ensure that our officers are better prepared to handle evolving security concerns while enhancing community trust and fostering collaboration. We must remain vigilant, strategic, and innovative in our approach to policing," stated DIG Lagat.
The opening ceremony was attended by several senior police officers, including DIG-APS Mr. Gilbert Masengeli, Deputy Director of Criminal Investigations (DCI) Mr. Onyango, NPLA Commandant Mr. Mathiu Kainga, Director of Training and Research Mr. David Birech, Deputy Commandant of NPLA Dr. David Muthondeki, and the Dean of Studies Ms. Sicily Gatiti, among other distinguished guests.
The course marks an important milestone in the National Police Service's commitment to continuous professional development and the enhancement of leadership capacity within the force. As the nation faces increasingly complex security challenges, programs like this will help ensure that law enforcement officers are equipped to safeguard the well-being of Kenyan citizens with intelligence-led, ethical, and community-centered policing practices.
