Eldoret Businessman Appeals for Government Protection Amid Life Threats and Family Dispute

Ibrahim Sidik Abdullatik, a prominent businessman based in Eldoret, has appealed to the government for urgent security protection, claiming that his life is in grave danger. Abdullatik, who is embroiled in a contentious assault case involving his in-laws, says he has been constantly trailed by unknown vehicles both during the day and night, making it impossible for him to conduct his business freely.

“I am unable to transact my business during the day for fear of being abducted by unknown vehicles that keep trailing my movements in Eldoret town and its environs,” said Abdullatik in a desperate plea for help. He alleges that the threats stem from a dispute with his in-laws, who are embroiled in an ongoing criminal case in the Eldoret court.

Abdullatik claims that the threats escalated after he disclosed sensitive information about his in-laws to the police. He believes they are pressuring him to withdraw the case, which is currently before Chief Magistrate Dennis Mikoyan. The case involves charges of grievous bodily harm against four of Abdullatik’s in-laws – Omar Mohammed, Khalid Omar, Asif Umar, and Tawqir – who are accused of assaulting him in April 2022 at Elgon View Estate in Uasin Gishu County.

The businessman has reported his concerns to local authorities, filing a statement at Eldoret police station under OB/No39 dated May 29, 2023. He claims to have made several attempts to reach out to various government agencies and human rights organizations, seeking protection, but has yet to see any action taken to address his safety concerns.

“I am appealing to the government to provide me with adequate security without further delays before any harm is visited on me by my tormentors who have curtailed my freedom of movement and association,” Abdullatik stated. He expressed fear that the ongoing court battle, involving his son’s marriage to a woman from the family of his in-laws, could result in his injury or death.

The assault case, which has caused tension between the two families over the past four years, has yet to be resolved, with Abdullatik unable to reach an out-of-court settlement despite his attempts. He believes his in-laws are unwilling to respect the court process and are determined to force him into dropping the charges in exchange for peace.

“I have tried to settle this matter out of court, but they were adamant. I don’t understand why they don’t want to obey the court process until the end,” Abdullatik added.

Uasin Gishu County Criminal Investigations Officer, Daniel Muleli, confirmed that the case is ongoing and is awaiting determination by the court. However, he did not provide further details on any protective measures that may be taken.

As Abdullatik continues to face mounting threats, his call for government intervention remains urgent, as he struggles with fear and uncertainty while navigating his ongoing legal battle.
