In celebration of International Women’s Day, Joan Atieno, a resilient entrepreneur and mother of four, took the opportunity to encourage women and young girls to rise up and be counted. Atieno, who has been running a successful cafeteria at the Eldoret National Polytechnic since 2012, emphasized the importance of passion, perseverance, and sacrifice in the business world.
Atieno, an alumna of the institution who graduated in 2009, understands the struggles of entrepreneurship firsthand. She acknowledged the tough realities of running a business, stating, "Business is hard; it is not for the faint-hearted. You have to come with passion."
Her journey, while filled with achievements, has not been without its challenges. As a business owner, Atieno has had to manage long hours, often starting her day at 3 a.m. and finishing at 9 p.m. This demanding schedule limits her time with her family, yet she remains committed to striking a balance between her professional and personal life. "You have to balance both work and family since both need you," she explained.
Beyond her entrepreneurial success, Atieno has a powerful message for the wider community. She called on the government to take stronger action in protecting young girls and women from gender-based violence and femicide. "The government should put up strict measures to support young ladies so they can fulfill their dreams and come of age," she said.
Joan Atieno’s words serve as a powerful reminder of the resilience and strength of women, particularly as the world continues to strive for gender equality and the empowerment of women and girls in all spheres of life.
