Fertilizer Cartels Target Journalist in Kitale, But His Report Leads to Government Action

In a harrowing turn of events, a journalist investigating fertilizer shortages in Kitale became the target of a violent attack by individuals believed to be linked to fertilizer cartels. The assailants, hired by those benefiting from artificially inflated prices, attacked the reporter and destroyed his phone in an attempt to thwart the investigation.

Collins Shitiebayi, a reporter with Citizen TV, had been assigned to investigate the persistent fertilizer shortages at the National Cereals and Produce Board (NCPB) depot in Kitale, which has been causing significant hardship for local farmers. The report aimed to uncover whether there was a genuine lack of supply or if cartels were creating artificial shortages to push up prices.

“I had no idea that my investigation would lead to such dangerous opposition,” Shitiebayi said in an interview. “I was simply doing my job as a journalist, but it seems my findings threatened the interests of those who profit from these inflated prices.”

Despite the assault, Shitiebayi remained determined to complete his investigation. His report, which exposed the manipulation of fertilizer supply, quickly gained traction among senior government officials, sparking immediate action. In response to the findings, officials assured farmers that measures would be taken to ensure smoother access to fertilizer and eliminate any artificial scarcity.

“The attack was meant to intimidate me and prevent the truth from coming out,” Shitiebayi continued. “But the support I received from both my colleagues and the government made it clear that the truth matters more than anything. The government’s intervention will allow farmers in the region to access the fertilizer they desperately need.”

The government's intervention, following Shitiebayi’s report, has brought hope to the farmers of Trans-Nzoia County, who have faced rising fertilizer costs and limited access to essential supplies. The swift action from the authorities is expected to lead to a more stable and fair fertilizer market, benefiting both local farmers and the broader agricultural sector.

Though Shitiebayi faced intimidation and personal loss during his investigation, he remains steadfast in his commitment to journalistic integrity. His report serves as a reminder of the vital role the media plays in holding powerful interests accountable and ensuring that the needs of ordinary citizens are met.

As of now, local authorities are investigating the assault on the journalist, and efforts are underway to curb the influence of fertilizer cartels in the region.
