Former Nyandarua Governor and Water CEC Member Sentenced to Two Years in Prison for Corruption

In a significant ruling, the former Nyandarua County Governor, Daniel Waithaka Mwangi, and the former County Executive Committee (CEC) Member for Water, Grace Wanjiru Gitonga, have each been sentenced to two years in prison or a fine of Kes 1 million for their involvement in a corruption scandal related to a Kes 50 million tender.

The two were convicted on March 13, 2025, after the Court found them guilty of various corruption-related offenses. The case revolved around the improper handling of procurement procedures and misuse of public office.

At the Nyahururu Court, Chief Magistrate Hon. Evans Keago delivered the sentences. Governor Waithaka was found guilty of abuse of office and failure to comply with procurement laws. He was sentenced to two years imprisonment for each charge, or alternatively, a fine of Kes 1 million per count. The sentences will run concurrently.

Similarly, Ms. Gitonga, who was convicted on charges of failure to comply with procurement laws and initiating a project without prior planning, received the same sentence: two years in prison for each count or a fine of Kes 1 million per charge, with the sentences running concurrently.

The court has set a mention date for March 24, 2025, to confirm whether the convicts have paid the fines or if they will begin serving their prison sentences. The outcome of this case marks a significant step in the ongoing fight against corruption within county governments.
