Governor Bii Visits Mzee Richard Tuwei's Avocado Farm to Promote Agricultural Diversification

Today, Governor Jonathan Bii, alongside Deputy Governor Hon. Kapkea Evans, visited Mzee Richard Tuwei's avocado farm, which highlights Uasin Gishu County's push for agricultural diversification. While maize remains a staple crop in the region, Mzee Tuwei’s successful venture into avocado farming demonstrates the growing potential for value-added crops in the county.

Governor Bii applauded Mzee Tuwei for his innovative approach to farming, noting that his decision to incorporate avocado farming alongside maize was in line with the county's vision of promoting agricultural diversification for greater economic resilience. The Governor emphasized that the county’s agricultural future lies in embracing high-value crops that offer farmers sustainable income opportunities beyond traditional farming.

“We are committed to supporting farmers like Mzee Tuwei who are leading the way in agricultural innovation. As we work to diversify our agricultural practices, we must ensure that all farmers have access to the tools and knowledge they need to succeed,” Governor Bii stated during the visit.

To further bolster such efforts, the county government is expanding extension services across all 30 wards. Agripreneurs are being deployed in each ward to offer tailored advice and training to farmers. Additionally, the monitoring of last year’s avocado seedlings and the expansion of propagation activities at Chebororwa Agricultural Training Center (ATC) are key initiatives aimed at boosting avocado production in the region.

“We are working to ensure that farmers not only have access to quality seedlings but also receive continuous support in growing high-value crops. Our goal is to help them increase productivity, profitability, and sustainability in their farming operations,” Governor Bii explained.

The Governor and his team toured Mzee Tuwei’s farm, where they saw firsthand the potential of avocado farming to complement traditional crops like maize. This visit reaffirms the county’s commitment to creating a robust agricultural sector that offers farmers diverse and sustainable farming options.

“Our county is at the forefront of agricultural innovation, and with the support of our agripreneurs, we are ready to take the next steps in revolutionizing farming practices. This visit to Mzee Tuwei’s farm is just one example of how we are enhancing agricultural diversification for the betterment of all farmers in Uasin Gishu,” concluded Governor Bii.

The Governor’s visit highlights Uasin Gishu’s continued dedication to transforming its agricultural landscape through the promotion of value-added crops and sustainable farming practices.
