Governor George Natembeya Pushes for Greater Support to Vulnerable Farmers and Calls for Increased Devolution of Funds

Trans-Nzoia Governor George Natembeya has vowed to increase support for the county’s farmers by boosting funding for free maize distribution and fertilizer provision in the upcoming financial year. Speaking during a seed distribution exercise in Mitambo and Moi Farm, Waitaluk Ward, Kiminini Sub-County, Governor Natembeya highlighted the ongoing challenges faced by local farmers and urged both the national and county governments to step up efforts to improve agricultural policies and resource allocation.

“The hardworking residents of Trans Nzoia have fed this country for decades without adequate support from the government,” Natembeya stated, as he underscored the need for the national government to allocate more resources to agriculture. He pointed out that Kenya's agricultural policies lag behind those of other developing nations, which heavily invest in agriculture to ensure food security and boost exports.

Governor Natembeya also criticized the current distribution of the national budget, noting that counties receive only 15% of the funds, while 85% remains under the control of the national government. He called for increased devolution of funds, especially for key sectors like agriculture, infrastructure, and health, arguing that delays in disbursement by the National Treasury are severely affecting service delivery at the grassroots level.

“The delay in disbursing these funds by the National Treasury is hindering service delivery. As governors, we have issued a 14-day ultimatum for the release of these funds, and if they are not released, county services may be suspended,” the Governor warned.

The Governor’s remarks were echoed by Phanice Khatundi, Trans Nzoia’s County Executive Committee (CEC) for Agriculture, who highlighted the positive impact of the free maize distribution program. “A 2kg packet of certified maize seeds can yield 8-10 bags of maize when cultivated properly, sustaining a household for an entire year,” Khatundi explained, emphasizing the importance of such initiatives in combating food insecurity.

Local Member of County Assembly (MCA) Furah Lusweti also praised the program, noting that it provides crucial support to vulnerable families. “This program ensures that even those without resources can put food on the table,” Lusweti said, adding that the County Assembly plans to allocate more funds to the initiative in the next financial year to extend its reach.

Governor Natembeya also raised concerns about the current state of the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC) in schools, citing a shortage of teachers, learning materials, and appropriate infrastructure. “The CBC curriculum started on the wrong foot and has failed our pupils,” he remarked, urging the government to address these challenges before it’s too late to salvage the system’s effectiveness.

In addition to his criticisms of agricultural policies, Governor Natembeya also pointed out the inefficiencies in the national government's political appointments. He questioned their real benefit to ordinary citizens and called for new leadership that can better address the country's growing challenges. “We need a government that is committed to equitable representation in cabinet appointments, one that truly understands the needs of the people,” he asserted.

As Trans Nzoia continues to push for agricultural reforms and more devolved funds, Governor Natembeya’s call for increased support for farmers, better policy frameworks, and more timely resource distribution highlights the urgent need for change. His leadership remains focused on improving the lives of the county’s residents through practical solutions, while also advocating for a more inclusive and responsive national government.
