Trans Nzoia Governor Dr. George Natembeya has urged for peace and unity ahead of the funeral service for the late former Chairman of the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC), Wafula Chebukati, dismissing fears of potential chaos during the event. Speaking at the home of Chebukati’s parents in Kapomboi, Kwanza Sub-county, the governor emphasized the importance of putting aside differences to ensure a peaceful and dignified farewell for the late IEBC chairman.
Governor Natembeya revealed that he had received information indicating that some politicians were planning to bring in paid goons to incite violence during the funeral, with the intention of blaming the chaos on him. He strongly condemned such actions, urging political figures to refrain from exploiting the event for personal gain or stirring unrest. "The family of the late patriot does not need to be drawn into chaos. We urge the political class to maintain peace and dignity during this solemn occasion," Natembeya stated.
He further emphasized that Trans Nzoia is not a sub-county of any other county, and visitors from other regions should come to mourn respectfully and peacefully. “For those coming from outside, come as visitors, mourn one of us, and return peacefully,” the governor urged.
Governor Natembeya also reassured the public that the funeral would be a dignified event, with President Dr. William Ruto and other high-level national and international dignitaries expected to attend. He called on everyone to maintain a peaceful atmosphere, warning against the use of hate speech or divisive rhetoric during the service.
"The late Chebukati was a deeply peaceful man, and we should honor his legacy by ensuring that his funeral is conducted with the utmost respect and tranquility," said the governor. He reiterated that the cosmopolitan nature of Trans Nzoia County would ensure the smooth running of the funeral proceedings, inviting all mourners to join in honoring the late chairman’s contributions to the nation.
As preparations for the funeral continue, Governor Natembeya’s call for peace and unity aims to ensure that the service remains a dignified and respectful tribute to the late Wafula Chebukati.
