Over two hundred thousand small scale farmers are set to benefit from free maize seed courtesy of the Trans Nzoia County Government.

Launching the program aimed to boost food production from all the twenty five wards, Trans Nzoia County Governor Dr. George Natembeya said his administration had targeted vulnerable farmers in a move to increase maize acreage and address food shortages.

The program was launched at Tumaini in Sinyereri in Trans Nzoia East Sub County .

The county boss noted that the initiative will increase the acreage of land under maize cultivation and address food shortages in the Country's food basket.

Launching the program, the Governor said the distribution of free seeds, specifically the H516 and H513 maize varieties supplied by Kenya Seed Company in collaboration with the county government of Trans Nzoia will increase food production and end chronic poverty associated with lack of food.

He highlighted the importance of supporting farmers through putting an end to importation of maize, wheat and other cereals in a move that would empower Kenyan farmers through economic emancipation.

" If we continue importing maize, wheat and other cereals to the Kenyan market we will not only be hurting the farmers but also we will be promoting farmers in other countries ", he said.

He said the use of abusive talk should be discarded and noted that the coming together of President Dr William Ruto and the former Prime Minister Raila Amolo Odinga was an awakening call to other communities among them the populous Luhya Community.

The Gen zees, he said had revolted during a demonstration whose end was the hijacking of the process by a certain political class.

The governor thanked area residents for keeping peace during the burial of former Independent electoral and boundaries commission chairman Emeritus Wafula Wanyonyi Chebukati.

On road carpeting the Governor told residents in the 25 wards to liaise with their respective area ward representatives in order to prioritize roads to be done.
