Trans Nzoia County Governor, Dr. George Natembeya, today joined thousands of mourners in bidding farewell to the late Emeritus Chairman of the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC), Wafula Chebukati. The emotional send-off took place at Chebukati's Sabata home in Kiminini Sub County, where dignitaries, including President Dr. William Samoei Ruto, were in attendance to honor the late chairman.
In his eulogy, Governor Natembeya paid tribute to Chebukati, emphasizing that his death was not due to his position but rather as a result of his unwavering commitment to the truth. Natembeya described Chebukati as a firm individual who stood his ground in defending integrity, despite facing opposition during his tenure at the helm of the electoral commission.
The Governor also took the opportunity to address the challenges within the IEBC, urging President Ruto to oversee a systematic restructuring of the commission. He pointed out the need to eliminate the culture of scapegoating the IEBC chair during election disputes, especially concerning election transmission and results.
In a heartfelt plea, Natembeya urged the Luhya community to unite and demand fair distribution of resources. He stressed the importance of standing together and negotiating as equal partners in the political and economic landscape. "The Luhya community must no longer wait for an invitation but must take their rightful place at the table of decision-making," he said, calling for a no-nonsense approach to achieving equitable development.
As the mourners gathered to celebrate Chebukati's legacy, Governor Natembeya's message was clear: unity, integrity, and proactive involvement are key to ensuring a fair and just future for the people of Trans Nzoia and the wider Luhya community.
