In a shocking incident at a public event, Trans Nzoia County Governor George Natembeya's driver, Saiphas Kaitano, sustained serious neck injuries after bravely shielding the governor from a direct stone attack. The incident occurred during a mass attended by the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) Chairman Wafula Chebukati, causing chaos at the venue.
Reports indicate that a stone was hurled at Governor Natembeya's vehicle, but Kaitano, showing remarkable presence of mind, instinctively stepped in front of the vehicle, taking the full brunt of the attack. The stone struck him in the neck, leading to serious injuries that required immediate medical attention. The driver was rushed to a nearby hospital, where he is currently receiving treatment.
In addition to the injury sustained by the driver, Governor Natembeya’s car was also damaged during the incident. The attack has left local authorities and the public in shock, raising concerns over security at public gatherings.
Governor Natembeya condemned the attack and expressed his gratitude towards Kaitano for his selflessness and quick thinking. "I am deeply grateful for Saiphas's courage in protecting me. His quick actions may have prevented even worse consequences," said the governor in a statement.
Local police are investigating the attack, though no suspects have been identified yet. Authorities are calling on the public to assist with any information that could lead to the arrest of those responsible. Meanwhile, security at future events is expected to be heightened following the disturbing incident.
As of now, Governor Natembeya and his team have vowed to cooperate with law enforcement to ensure those behind the attack are brought to justice.
