In a unanimous and unopposed decision, Hon. Ken Chonga, the Member of Parliament for Kilifi South, has been elected as the new Chairperson of the Labour Committee, succeeding Hon. Erick Muchangi of Runyenjes.
The election, which took place in Parliament today, saw Hon. Chonga take the reins of the influential committee, with members expressing their full confidence in his leadership abilities. The decision was reached without contest, reflecting the widespread support Chonga enjoys among his peers.
Hon. Fabian Muli, the Vice-Chairperson of the Labour Committee, led the team in acknowledging the invaluable contributions of the outgoing chairperson, Hon. Muchangi, whose tenure was praised for its diligence and commitment to improving labour issues in Kenya.
“We will offer you our support and commitment in the undertakings of this committee,” Hon. Muli assured Hon. Chonga, as he called for unity and collaboration within the committee moving forward. Muli also highlighted the importance of teamwork in achieving the committee’s long-term objectives.
In his acceptance speech, Hon. Chonga expressed heartfelt gratitude to his colleagues for the trust placed in him. He outlined his vision for the committee, stressing the importance of adopting a consultative approach to decision-making that would involve all members in shaping the committee’s agenda.
“I am dedicated to moving this committee forward. I thank everyone for considering me as the chairman of this great committee,” Hon. Chonga said, adding that his leadership would focus on addressing critical labour-related issues affecting Kenyans, particularly those that impact the working conditions and rights of workers across the country.
With his election, Hon. Chonga’s leadership is expected to usher in a new chapter for the Labour Committee, with a focus on reforms and progressive policies to ensure that the welfare of Kenyan workers is given top priority.
