Hon. Lydia Haika (Taita Taveta) and Hon. Simon Kingara (Ruiru) have been re-elected unopposed to continue their leadership roles as Chairperson and Vice Chairperson, respectively, of the Diaspora Affairs and Migrant Workers Committee. The two legislators, who previously held these positions, will continue steering the 15-member committee in its efforts to represent, protect, and promote the interests of Kenyans living and working abroad.
In his remarks following the re-election, Hon. Kingara expressed his gratitude to the committee members for their unwavering support. He called on them to continue showing the same commitment to the committee's mandate and reiterated the importance of their collective effort in advancing the rights and well-being of migrant workers and Kenyans in the diaspora.
“I want to thank each one of you for your trust and continued support. Together, we have a vital role in ensuring that the voices of Kenyans abroad are heard and that we work tirelessly to protect their interests,” said Hon. Kingara.
Hon. Haika, who was also re-elected unopposed, thanked the committee members for their confidence in her leadership. She reflected on the journey the committee has had since its formation and highlighted the progress made in laying a strong and stable foundation.
“We have spent two years preparing, consulting, and laying the groundwork. The time has now come to shift gears. We are no longer in the planning phase. We are ready to hit the road and begin the real work—work that will bring tangible results for the millions of Kenyans working abroad,” said Hon. Haika.
Looking ahead, the committee has set its sights on prioritizing legislative initiatives, including fast-tracking the Migrant Workers Legislative Proposal. Additionally, the committee plans to focus on monitoring private recruitment agencies and will work closely with the Ministry of Labour and the Ministry of Foreign and Diaspora Affairs to address the challenges faced by migrant workers and Kenyans in the diaspora.
The re-election of Hon. Haika and Hon. Kingara signals a continued commitment to strengthening the systems that support Kenyans abroad, ensuring that their needs are effectively addressed through legislation, policy advocacy, and oversight.
As the committee takes on this new phase of its work, it is clear that the leaders are poised to play an instrumental role in shaping a more supportive and inclusive environment for migrant workers and diaspora communities worldwide.
