A 29-year-old househelp, Fleviar Muhonja Anaya, has been arrested after pulling off a daring heist, vanishing with Sh 2.2 million from her employer’s home in Nairobi. Muhonja's arrest came after a well-coordinated effort by detectives from the DCI Nairobi Regional Headquarters and the Crime Research and Intelligence Bureau.
The incident took place on March 16, 2025, when Muhonja's employer left her at home while running errands. What seemed like a normal day took a dramatic turn when the employer received a call from a security guard, who reported seeing Muhonja leaving the house carrying a large bag. When questioned, Muhonja claimed she was delivering something for her employer. However, sensing something was amiss, the employer attempted to contact Muhonja, only to find her phone switched off.
Racing back to the house, the employer was greeted with a devastating sight—Sh 2.2 million that had been safely stored in the bedroom had disappeared, along with Muhonja. The alarm was raised, and investigations were swiftly initiated.
Detectives launched an extensive investigation, leveraging forensic leads that ultimately led to Muhonja’s whereabouts. The breakthrough came when she was tracked down and arrested in Malava, Kakamega County.
Upon her arrest, Muhonja cooperated with authorities and led detectives to multiple locations where the stolen money had been hidden. The first recovery was made at her grandmother's house in Kapsoi, Vihiga County, where Sh 700,000 was recovered. The operation then continued to her rural home in Kipkaren, Uasin Gishu County, where detectives discovered three chain links bought using part of the stolen money.
The investigation culminated in a final recovery of Sh 800,000 from Muhonja's rented house in the Fuata Nyayo area of Nairobi’s South B.
Muhonja is currently in custody at Capitol Hill Police Station, where she is undergoing processing. She is expected to be charged in court in the coming days.
This case serves as a stark reminder of the growing need for vigilance and trust when it comes to hiring domestic workers, as well as the ongoing efforts by law enforcement to ensure that such crimes do not go unpunished.
