The Inspector General of the National Police Service (NPS), Mr. Douglas Kanja, today joined the Cabinet Secretary for the Ministry of Interior and National Administration, Hon. Kipchumba Murkomen, for an extensive security assessment of Baringo County. The joint visit highlighted the ongoing efforts to enhance security in the region, particularly focusing on the impact of Operation Maliza Uhalifu in the North Rift.
The operation, which was launched in 2022, has seen significant progress in addressing long-standing security issues, particularly cattle rustling, which has plagued pastoralist communities in the North Rift for years. During the briefing, the CS was informed about the operation’s successes, including dismantling the deeply rooted networks involved in cattle raiding, which has contributed to a notable reduction in violence and insecurity.
Despite acknowledging sporadic incidents of insecurity, Hon. Murkomen expressed satisfaction with the overall improvements, noting that normalcy was gradually returning to the region. Schools have reopened, and economic activities have resumed, signaling a positive shift towards stability and development in Baringo County.
"While challenges remain, the progress we have made through Operation Maliza Uhalifu is commendable. We are seeing the fruits of our efforts in returning peace to the region," said Hon. Murkomen. He further urged local leaders to work hand-in-hand with law enforcement agencies, advocating for community policing as a key strategy to maintain peace and foster unity among the people they serve.
The Inspector General of Police, Mr. Douglas Kanja, praised the dedication and commitment of officers deployed in the North Rift, affirming that the visible improvements in security were a direct result of their tireless work. "The efforts of our officers on the ground are yielding positive results, and we remain committed to ensuring that peace is maintained in this region," said Mr. Kanja.
The delegation, which also included senior officials such as the Deputy Inspector General of the Administration Police Service (DIG-APS) Mr. Gilbert Masengeli, Regional Commissioner for Rift Valley Mr. Hassan Abdi, Commandant of the General Service Unit (GSU) Mr. Ranson Lolmodooni, and other key law enforcement figures, expressed continued support for the ongoing security operations and peace-building initiatives.
The government’s focus on collaboration with local leaders and communities remains a priority, with both CS Murkomen and IG Kanja emphasizing the importance of unity and joint efforts to secure long-term peace in Baringo County and the wider North Rift region.
As the situation continues to stabilize, the government remains committed to supporting both security and development initiatives in the area, with the goal of ensuring sustained peace and prosperity for all residents of Baringo County.
