The Judiciary has issued a stern warning to former Cabinet Secretary Raphael Tuju over his recent public comments regarding an ongoing legal battle between the East African Development Bank (EADB) and the government. The case, which involves an alleged financial dispute between the EADB and a government agency, has attracted significant public interest, and Tuju’s statements have raised concerns about the potential impact on the fairness of the proceedings.
In a statement released today, the Judiciary expressed its concern over the potential influence of such comments on the legal process. The Judiciary emphasized its commitment to ensuring the fairness, justice, and impartiality of all ongoing cases and stated that Tuju's remarks could be seen as an attempt to sway public opinion and influence the outcome of the case.
"The Judiciary is committed to upholding the principles of justice, fairness, and impartiality in all legal proceedings. It has come to our attention that certain public comments, including those made by Mr. Raphael Tuju, may be construed as an attempt to sway the public and possibly influence the legal process. The Judiciary takes a firm stance against any actions or statements that may undermine the integrity of the court," the Judiciary’s official statement read.
Tuju made the controversial remarks during a public forum, where he discussed the legal dispute and speculated on the potential political motivations behind the case. He suggested that the dispute was being used for political purposes and raised concerns about possible bias in the court’s handling of the matter.
“There is more to this case than meets the eye. It’s clear to me that some individuals are using the courts for political purposes. It’s not about justice anymore, it’s about settling scores. I only hope the courts remain impartial, but the signs are worrying,” Tuju stated.
His comments have sparked a mixed reaction, with some supporting his view that the case may have underlying political motives, while others have expressed concern that such statements could undermine public trust in the judicial process.
The Judiciary's warning highlights its efforts to maintain the integrity of legal proceedings and ensure that all cases are handled impartially, free from external influence. While Tuju has not publicly responded to the Judiciary's warning, the matter is expected to continue to attract attention as the case progresses.
Legal experts have cautioned that public comments on ongoing cases, particularly from influential figures, can potentially interfere with the justice system’s ability to function without prejudice or bias. As the case between the EADB and the government continues, all eyes will be on how it unfolds amidst the public scrutiny surrounding the matter.
