Kanduyi Member of Parliament, John Makali, has called on tertiary students to reject drug abuse and instead focus on harnessing the potential of the digital space to improve their future prospects. His remarks came during a bursary distribution event at Kibabii University, aimed at supporting students from Kibabii University and Bungoma Polytechnic in Bungoma County.
Makali emphasized that students are the future leaders of the country and should take full advantage of digital opportunities available to them. He noted that many people have greatly benefited from digital platforms, and he encouraged students to follow suit. "This is your time to seize opportunities and do great things," Makali said, urging students to avoid misusing social media and instead seek positive alternatives that contribute to the nation's development.
The MP stressed that education is one of the primary agendas for the youth, noting that the Constituency Development Fund (CDF) has allocated 52 million shillings to promote education within the constituency. Approximately 2,000 tertiary students from eight wards will each receive 10,000 shillings to support their educational endeavors.
Makali highlighted the transparency of the selection process for the bursary beneficiaries, which was carried out at the grassroots level with public participation. Among the institutions benefiting from the initiative are Kibabii University, which received 223 slots worth 2,230,000 shillings, along with students from Maseno University, Masinde Muliro University, and Bungoma National Polytechnic.
In his address, Makali also urged young people to take advantage of government programs such as the Ajira Digital Program, youth empowerment initiatives, and NYOTA to access grants and further boost their entrepreneurial efforts. However, he expressed concern over the low uptake of government loans and grants, calling on youth to actively engage with these opportunities to better their futures.
The MP also stressed the importance of supporting government initiatives and rallying behind local leaders committed to transforming the country’s economy. Additionally, Makali encouraged young people to register for National Identification Cards, which are now free of charge, as a vital step toward accessing various services and opportunities.
As the event concluded, Makali's message resonated with the students, urging them to embrace education and positive digital platforms, while remaining vigilant against the harmful effects of drug abuse. His continued advocacy for youth empowerment is seen as a critical step toward building a more productive and prosperous future for the youth of Kanduyi and beyond.
