Kawira Mwangaza Breaks Silence on Impeachment, Defends Women in Leadership

Former Meru Governor Kawira Mwangaza has broken her silence on the recent impeachment that ousted her from office, describing the entire process as a politically motivated attack rooted in male chauvinism and a refusal to accept women in leadership. In a powerful statement, Mwangaza condemned the forces behind her impeachment, pointing to a broader culture of systemic discrimination against women in politics.

Mwangaza, who assumed office in August 2022, acknowledged the challenges of leading as a woman in a patriarchal society, but expressed her gratitude for the secret ballot that allowed the people of Meru to rise above gender biases and elect her based on her vision and leadership qualities. She emphasized that the election was a pivotal moment of empowerment, but the real struggle for leadership began once she took office.

"My victory at the ballot box was only the beginning," Mwangaza said. "The challenges of leadership in a patriarchal society are relentless. Despite the mandate given to me by the people of Meru, I faced constant frustration and resistance from some quarters, who sought to undermine my authority and dismiss my achievements—simply because I am a woman."

Throughout her tenure, Mwangaza remained steadfast in her commitment to serving the people of Meru, spearheading transformative projects in sectors such as healthcare, education, infrastructure, and agriculture. However, her refusal to conform to political manipulation made her a target for male political rivals and powerful figures within the National Government.

"My administration was focused on the needs of the people, delivering real progress, but my refusal to bow to political pressures made me a target," Mwangaza reflected. "The impeachment was not about accountability; it was a calculated move orchestrated by male chauvinists and political competitors who saw my success as a threat."

She also highlighted the role of the National Government, which, according to her, actively influenced the impeachment process to silence a woman who was unwilling to be politically manipulated. Mwangaza criticized the political establishment for not upholding the rule of law and expressed deep frustration with the interference she faced, even from the courts, which she believes blocked her access to justice.

"My impeachment was a calculated scheme, not a reflection of my performance. It was orchestrated by those who feared my ability to lead with integrity and transparency," she said. "This is not just an attack on me; it's an attack on democracy, gender equality, and every Kenyan woman who aspires to lead."

Mwangaza pointed out the public celebration that followed her impeachment, where those behind the plot openly took credit for her removal. She said their actions revealed their true motives, emphasizing that her downfall was not a result of public dissatisfaction but a political move to perpetuate male dominance in leadership.

She went on to address the people of Meru, thanking them for their unwavering support and pledging to continue fighting for the county’s development. "To the people of Meru, your voices matter, and I will continue to fight for our county's progress. I will not be silenced," Mwangaza asserted.

Turning her focus to the broader struggle for gender equality, she called on the women of Kenya to rise above fear and intimidation. "This fight is not just mine; it is a fight for every woman who dares to dream of leadership in a society that often seeks to crush those dreams," she said. "We must stand together to break these barriers and create a future where women leaders are celebrated, not vilified."

Mwangaza emphasized that her legal battle to clear her name is far from over. "I will explore all legal avenues to challenge this injustice," she vowed. "This is a fight for democracy, fairness, and the future of Kenya’s women leaders."

In closing, she called on all Kenyans to reject the erosion of democracy and the misuse of power. "We must demand accountability and transparency from our leaders," she urged. "The people of Meru deserve leaders who will serve them with honesty and dedication, not those who are beholden to the interests of a select few."

Mwangaza’s defiant statement serves as a powerful reminder of the ongoing struggle for gender equality and the challenges women face in leadership roles, even in 2025. She remains resolute in her mission to challenge the status quo and continue advocating for the people of Meru.
