In a remarkable recognition of leadership and innovation, Dr. Jane Njuguna, the CEO of the Kenya Forestry Research Institute (KEFRI), was awarded top honors at the Digital Transformation Public Sector Forum & Awards 2025. The award was a nod to the groundbreaking impact of the JazaMiti app, a digital solution spearheaded by KEFRI that supports climate resilience efforts across the country.
At the event, Dr. Njuguna was lauded for her forward-thinking approach in leveraging technology to enhance Kenya’s forestry sector. Under her guidance, KEFRI has seen significant strides in advancing climate resilience through digital platforms like JazaMiti, which empowers farmers and communities to plant and maintain trees more effectively. Dr. Njuguna’s dedication to achieving Kenya’s 30% tree cover target by 2032 was highlighted as central to the country’s broader environmental goals.
In addition to the award, Rt. Gen. Samson Mwathethe, KEFRI’s Board Chair, also received recognition for his instrumental role in supporting the organization's initiatives. The ceremony also marked the launch of eight vehicles and three motorbikes aimed at improving seed collection and distribution throughout Kenya. These vehicles will significantly enhance KEFRI’s capacity to distribute high-quality seeds, supporting Kenya's ambitious forestry goals.
Dr. Njuguna emphasized that KEFRI remains committed to the long-term goal of meeting the 30% tree cover target by 2032, ensuring that Kenya continues to play a pivotal role in global climate change mitigation. "Our focus is not just on planting trees but also on ensuring that these trees are managed sustainably for generations to come," she said.
Her visionary leadership has positioned KEFRI at the forefront of innovation in the forestry sector, combining technology, research, and strategic partnerships to foster a greener, more sustainable future for Kenya.
