A year after the tragic passing of their son, Kenyan marathoner Kelvin Kiptum, his parents, Mzee Samson Cheruiyot and his wife, have opened up about their continuing struggles. The family, residing in Naiberi, Uasin Gishu, revealed that their government-built house remains under-equipped and lacks basic furniture, adding to the burden of their grief.
The living room, which they use for daily activities, is furnished with makeshift chairs. Meanwhile, their bedroom features only a mattress on the floor, with a blanket serving as a makeshift curtain. The modest living conditions reflect the family's hardship, compounded by the deep emotional pain of losing their son under mysterious circumstances in Eldoret in 2024.
In an emotional interview, Mzee Cheruiyot expressed the ongoing sorrow, stating, “We are alone, where are the kids? We have said we will take care of our son now. We are talking to him—what else can we do? I will not forget our son.” He added that he still speaks to his late son, hoping that one day, Kiptum will provide answers about his untimely death.
“We are waiting for the day he will speak. He will tell me what happened in Eldoret. It’s like a dream,” Mzee Cheruiyot continued, his voice heavy with grief.
The loss of Kelvin Kiptum, who was regarded as one of Kenya's rising stars in athletics, has left a deep wound not only in his family but also within the Kenyan sports community. Many continue to mourn his untimely departure, as his potential was cut short before he could achieve even greater success on the global stage.
Despite their hardships, the Cheruiyot family remains hopeful. They continue to hold on to the memories of their son, and the unwavering belief that one day, they will get the answers they seek.
As the year passes since Kiptum's death, his parents, though struggling, have made it clear that they will never forget him and will continue to honor his memory.
