Ken Okwara Criticizes Nation Newspaper Over Coup Allegations, Calls for Clarity on Security Matters

Former Nambale MP aspirant Ken Okwara has strongly criticized the Nation Newspaper over a controversial headline suggesting that Opposition Leader Raila Odinga saved President William Ruto from an impending military coup. Okwara termed the report as misleading and dangerous, calling for accountability from the media house.

In a statement, Okwara questioned the credibility of the claims, arguing that Kenya’s security intelligence is firmly within the control of the President, who serves as the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces.

“If indeed Opposition Leader Raila Odinga saved President William Ruto from an impending coup, then we should have seen some reshuffle within the disciplined forces by now. Some heads need to roll. The President must move fast and consolidate power within the armed forces,” Okwara stated.

He further cast doubt on whether Odinga actually made the remarks attributed to him, suggesting that the media may have quoted him out of context.

“The Nation Newspaper must be called out to account for this misleading headline. It undermines the Presidency and paints a false picture of Kenya having a weak executive hold on security matters,” he added.

Okwara emphasized that security intelligence is first received by the President, not the opposition, questioning how Odinga could have intervened in preventing a coup.

“From where do the armed forces take instructions? Not Baba, of course. So how did he stop an impending coup?” he asked.

The former aspirant warned that such reckless journalism could have far-reaching consequences, potentially destabilizing the country.

“One silly, stupid mistake can trigger a fire we may not put off for years. We must advocate for democracy, but peacefully and responsibly,” he cautioned.

Okwara called on government agencies and media regulators to hold the publication accountable for its reporting, warning against sensational headlines that could stoke tensions.

End.
