Kenya Launches Training on Fabrication and Operation of Local Oil Expellers to Boost Local Manufacturing

The Principal Secretary for Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises Development, Susan Mang'eni, officially launched a one-week training program on the fabrication, assembling, and operation of oil expellers at the Kariobangi Center for Excellence. The initiative is designed to equip local innovators and Jua Kali artisans with the technical skills necessary to manufacture high-quality, high-capacity edible oil grinding machines locally, marking a significant step towards boosting Kenya's manufacturing capabilities.

Speaking at the event, Mang'eni emphasized the importance of fostering homegrown solutions to support Kenya’s manufacturing sector and reduce the country’s dependence on imported machinery. "Just like the evolution of the posho mill industry, we must now focus on locally fabricating oil expellers that can process more kilograms per hour. This move will not only enhance efficiency in the edible oils sector but also create jobs for our youth and contribute to the broader economy," she said.

The initiative aims to address the growing demand for locally processed edible oils, which has become a key pillar of Kenya’s economic growth. By empowering Jua Kali artisans to fabricate superior oil expellers, the government hopes to strengthen small-scale oil producers, reduce dependency on imports, and encourage industrial development within the country.

Several key stakeholders were in attendance to witness the launch, including representatives from the Kenya Industrial Research and Development Institute (KIRDI), the Micro and Small Enterprises Authority (MSEA), the Kenya Bureau of Standards (KEBS), the Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA), and Kenya Industrial Estates. Their involvement underscores a collective commitment to ensuring that the locally fabricated machines meet industry standards, comply with tax regulations, and receive the financial and technical support needed to scale up production.

This project aligns with Kenya’s broader strategy to promote local manufacturing, enhance food security, and create sustainable employment opportunities for the youth. It also supports the country’s vision of becoming an industrialized and self-sufficient economy.

Through these efforts, the government aims to continue driving economic growth, reducing reliance on imports, and promoting the development of locally produced goods, particularly in key sectors like edible oil production.
