The Kenya Leather Industry Park (KLIP) remains on course for its official launch by March 31, 2025, marking a major milestone in Kenya’s push to transform its leather sector. A recent progress review meeting in Kinanie, Machakos County, brought together key stakeholders to assess the ongoing development of the multi-billion-shilling project, which is set to position Kenya as a leading player in leather production and exports.
During the visit, Kenya Leather Development Council (KLDC) CEO, Dr. Isaac Noor, reaffirmed the project's commitment to meeting its deadline, emphasizing its far-reaching economic benefits.
> “The Kenya Leather Industry Park is a game-changer for the leather sector. It will enhance value addition, create employment, and position Kenya as a regional hub for leather production and exports,” Dr. Noor stated.
As part of the government’s broader industrialization and manufacturing agenda, KLIP is designed to modernize local leather processing, reduce reliance on raw hides and skins exports, and boost the competitiveness of finished leather products. The park will also provide a structured and environmentally sustainable ecosystem for leather production, ensuring efficiency and adherence to global best practices.
Principal Secretary for Livestock Development, Jonathan Mueke, visited the Kenya Leather Industrial Park in Kinanie, Mavoko, Machakos County, to evaluate the progress of critical infrastructure needed for its completion and operationalization. His visit underscored the government’s commitment to ensuring that the park is investor-ready by the scheduled launch date.
The completion of roads, water, energy, ICT, and security infrastructure is expected to pave the way for investors to set up leather-related factories, further stimulating industrial growth in the sector. Once fully operational, KLIP is projected to create thousands of jobs, offer market opportunities for livestock farmers, and strengthen Kenya’s position in regional and global leather markets.
PS Mueke commended the collaborative efforts of various government agencies, including the Ministries of Roads, Water, Energy, ICT, Investment Promotion, Public Works, Internal Security, and the National Police Service, in supporting the project’s implementation.
With the March 2025 launch fast approaching, Dr. Noor assured stakeholders that collaboration, oversight, and adherence to international standards remain a priority to maximize KLIP’s impact. The park is expected to revolutionize Kenya’s leather sector, driving industrial growth and expanding the country’s export potential.
