Kenya Re Donates Assistive Devices to National Police Service Officers

The National Police Service (NPS) today received a generous donation of assistive devices from the Kenya Reinsurance Corporation Limited (Kenya Re) during a ceremony held at the National Police College Embakasi 'A' Campus in Nairobi.

The donated devices, which include wheelchairs, hearing aids, white canes, and orthopedic shoes, are set to benefit 73 NPS officers who sustained injuries while on duty. This marks the second significant donation from Kenya Re to the NPS, following a similar contribution last year.

During the event, Kenya Re’s Group Managing Director, Dr. Hillary Wachinga, reiterated the company’s commitment to supporting officers with disabilities, a gesture that will help to restore their independence and mobility. A comprehensive field assessment was carried out to identify the specific needs of each officer, ensuring that the right devices were allocated.

In his address, Inspector General of Police, Mr. Japhet Koome, expressed his gratitude to Kenya Re for their continued support. He emphasized that the donated devices would greatly enhance the mobility and autonomy of the affected officers, allowing them to carry out their duties effectively. "These devices are not just items of support, but tools that will help restore the dignity and independence of our officers," said IG Koome.

He also pledged the NPS’s commitment to ensuring that officers with disabilities are well-supported, announcing the establishment of a dedicated office at NPS Headquarters and the NPS Hospital to handle claims and other issues related to officers’ welfare.

Dr. Wachinga spoke about the importance of security for economic progress, stating that without a stable security environment, national development would be hindered. He reassured the NPS that Kenya Re would continue to support their efforts, including tackling mental health challenges among officers, in addition to providing physical assistive devices.

The ceremony was attended by senior NPS officials, including Deputy Inspector General of Police (DIG) Administration Police Service, Mr. Gilbert Masengeli, Commandant of the National Police College Embakasi 'A' Campus, Mr. Davies Lomwatu, and other distinguished officers from both the NPS and Kenya Re.

The collaboration between Kenya Re and the NPS underscores the vital role of supporting the well-being of officers who risk their lives daily to protect the safety and security of all Kenyans.
