Kesses MP Condemns Fire Incident and Excessive Police Force at Cheptiret Centre

Kesses Member of Parliament, CPA Julius Ruto, has expressed his deep sorrow over the devastating fire that ravaged Cheptiret Centre on the night of March 25, 2025, destroying 15 businesses and leaving numerous traders without their means of livelihood. The fire, which swept through the heart of the business hub, has left many struggling to come to terms with their losses.

In a heartfelt statement, MP Julius Ruto extended his sympathies to the affected traders and their families, emphasizing the profound impact this tragedy has had on their lives. "My heart goes out to all those whose businesses were destroyed in this senseless fire. I understand the pain, the uncertainty, and the frustration that comes with losing everything overnight. This is a huge blow to the traders who have worked tirelessly to sustain their families and communities," said Ruto.

However, Ruto expressed his strong condemnation of the excessive use of force by the police during the confrontations earlier on March 25, prior to the fire. The MP expressed concern over reports of unnecessary aggression by law enforcement officers, which escalated tensions between the police and local residents. "While the role of the police in maintaining peace and order is indispensable, it is crucial that their actions be guided by professionalism, fairness, and respect for human rights. The violence witnessed yesterday was both unacceptable and deeply disturbing," Ruto stated.

Ruto called for a comprehensive investigation into the matter to ensure that those responsible for the use of excessive force are held accountable. He further called for measures to be put in place to prevent similar occurrences in the future, urging both the police and the community to work together to foster mutual respect and understanding.

"I urge the relevant authorities to carry out a thorough investigation into the conduct of the police during the incidents at Cheptiret Centre. We must ensure that accountability prevails and that no such occurrences take place again. We must also work to rebuild the trust between the community and the law enforcement agencies," he added.

The MP also promised to engage with both local and national authorities to support the affected traders and ensure that they receive assistance to help them recover from the devastation caused by the fire.

As the community of Cheptiret Centre grapples with the aftermath of this tragic incident, Ruto's call for justice and accountability resonates, reminding all of the importance of fairness, transparency, and compassion in times of crisis.
