The Kenya Women Parliamentary Association (KEWOPA) has issued a strong condemnation of recent remarks made by Trans Nzoia County Executive Committee (CEC) Member Phanice Naliaka, calling them disrespectful and detrimental to the progress of gender equality in Kenya.

In a statement, KEWOPA expressed deep concern over Naliaka’s comments, which they argue trivialize women’s leadership and reinforce harmful stereotypes. The association emphasized that such remarks not only undermine the dignity of women but also threaten efforts to eradicate Female Genital Mutilation (FGM), a practice widely recognized as a human rights violation.

“Women in leadership are defined by their vision, competence, and dedication to service, not by outdated perceptions rooted in harmful practices,” KEWOPA stated. The organization underscored that no woman should face discrimination based on her background, particularly those who have survived FGM.

Kenya has made significant strides in addressing gender discrimination and harmful practices, and KEWOPA warned that statements such as those made by Naliaka risk reversing these gains. The association has urged all leaders to use their platforms responsibly to advocate for women’s rights rather than spread inflammatory narratives.

KEWOPA has officially called for an immediate retraction of the remarks and a public apology from the Trans Nzoia CEC.

“As leaders, we have a responsibility to shape a progressive and inclusive Kenya. We must uphold the dignity of all women and champion policies that promote leadership, equality, and respect for human rights,” said Hon. Leah Sankaire, Chairperson of KEWOPA.

KEWOPA reaffirmed its dedication to advancing women’s leadership and ensuring equal representation in all sectors of society. The association continues to advocate for policies that empower women and protect them from harmful cultural and societal biases.

As the call for accountability intensifies, all eyes are now on Phanice Naliaka’s response, with many expecting her to retract her remarks and issue a public apology. KEWOPA remains steadfast in its mission to safeguard the dignity and rights of all women in Kenya.
