KEWOPA Leads Dialogue on Women in Leadership in Makueni

The Kenya Women Parliamentary Association (KEWOPA) gathered leaders and community members in Makueni for a crucial dialogue on the progress of women in leadership. The event, held under the Inclusive Legislatures for Gender Responsive Policies Project (ILGRP), provided a platform for open discussions on strategies that amplify women’s voices in Kenya’s political landscape.

During the meeting, participants critically assessed key public services and government projects, highlighting both successes and gaps in gender inclusivity. The forum encouraged a collaborative approach towards shaping public policies, with a central message: men must support women, and women must unite to drive a common agenda.

Hon. Susan Kiamba, a key speaker at the event, emphasized the need for an enabling legislative environment that supports women’s leadership. “Let’s ensure we create an enabling environment in legislation for women. Let’s not patronize development,” she urged, calling for the active participation of women in all areas of policy-making and decision-making.

The dialogue highlighted the importance of women stepping up in leadership roles, not only as policymakers but as agents of change who drive real transformation. Attendees emphasized that meaningful change in Kenya’s political and social systems will only occur when policies are shaped by those most impacted — the women.

The event also saw participation from the National Gender and Equality Commission, the Centre for Rights Education and Awareness (CREAW), CRAWN Trust, and the Parliamentary Centre. These organizations played a key role in encouraging the conversations that centered on transforming systems to be more inclusive, responsive, and reflective of the diverse needs of the population.

As the dialogue came to a close, a clear message resonated: the collective push for gender equality in leadership is vital for the future of Kenya. Women, united in purpose, must continue to challenge existing structures and advocate for policies that foster inclusive governance.

This event serves as a reminder that real change happens when all voices are heard, especially those of women, whose perspectives have the power to shape policies for a more equitable future.
