KEWOPA Strengthens Commitment to Safe and Inclusive Education at Bidii Primary School

The Kenya Women Parliamentary Association (KEWOPA) continues to make impactful strides in promoting safe, inclusive, and gender-sensitive learning environments for young people. Following their engagement with students at Dagoretti Mixed School, KEWOPA recently visited Bidii Primary School in Makadara, reinforcing their mission to combat Gender-Based Violence (GBV) and raise awareness of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

The visit, which was aimed at empowering students, featured a series of enlightening discussions led by key figures. Hon. Esther M. Passaris, OGW, emphasized the importance of creating safe spaces where students could express themselves freely. "Speak out through the Talking Boxes," she urged, encouraging students to voice their concerns and ensure that their issues were heard and addressed.

Florence Syevuo from SDGs Kenya Forum also addressed the gathering, highlighting the crucial role young change-makers play in driving the SDGs forward. She urged the students to take ownership of their futures, advocating for the power of youth in shaping sustainable development within their communities and beyond.

The Ministry of Education was also represented, reaffirming the government's commitment to integrating the SDGs into the education sector, particularly with a focus on gender equality, education, and the empowerment of both boys and girls.

The staff and students at Bidii Primary School fully embraced the initiative, showing a strong commitment to tackling injustices and championing equality. As part of the engagement, KEWOPA unveiled murals and Talking Boxes—innovative tools designed to spark conversation and encourage students to share their thoughts on gender-based violence and other pertinent issues affecting their lives.

These murals and Talking Boxes serve as more than just visual aids—they are a powerful call to action, urging students to speak up, raise their voices, and play an active role in fostering change within their communities. The initiative represents a significant step toward ensuring that young people, particularly in schools, feel empowered and equipped to take action against injustice and inequality.

KEWOPA’s ongoing efforts to engage students in conversations about GBV, gender equality, and the SDGs aim to cultivate a generation of young people who are not only aware of their rights but are also motivated to act as agents of positive social change.
