The Deputy Chief of Staff, Performance and Delivery Management in the Executive Office of the President, Mr. Eliud Owalo has hailed the Maragua Ridge Irrigation Project as a pivotal development for the farming community in Murang’a county. The Ksh.312 million project, which is now 90 per cent complete, is poised to transform the livelihoods of 848 farmers across 400 acres in Kamahuha location, Maragua Constituency.
“This project will be a gamechanger,” Mr. Owalo remarked during an inspection tour of key national projects in Murang’a. “If these farmers are well-organized and receive the necessary government support, especially in terms of extension services and market linkages, we will have money circulating at the grassroots level.”
The project is expected to be a major boost for a region traditionally affected by drought.
“This area is traditionally dry. With this project, farmers here can undertake various activities like growing fruits, vegetables, maize, and beans,” Mr. Owalo said.
Already, over 12,700 jobs have been created by the project, greatly enhancing food security and spurring economic growth in the area. Four hundred farmers are already connected and irrigating their farms.
Mr. Owalo was accompanied by Murang’a County Commissioner, Mr. Joshua Nkanatha, and officers from the Government Delivery Unit (GDU), as well as local security team members, during the tour.
The Maragua Ridge Irrigation Project is one of the several national initiatives aimed at reshaping the socio-economic landscape of the county.
Alongside the irrigation project, Mr. Owalo also inspected the Makuyu Affordable Housing Project, a Ksh 1.8 billion initiative of the State Department for Housing and Urban Development. Launched three weeks ago, foundation works are ongoing for 764 housing units - a timely response to the growing need for affordable housing, while also generating employment opportunities for local youth.
In addition, the Makenji Affordable Housing Project in Kandara constituency is progressing well, with 49 per cent of the work already completed. The State Department for Housing and Urban Development is implementing the project to the tune of Ksh 491.5 million to deliver 220 much needed housing units upon completion.
These projects are more than just infrastructural developments – they represent a significant leap forward in the county’s economic and social transformation. By enhancing food security, creating jobs, and providing affordable housing, they are creating a lasting impact that will be felt by generations to come.
With continued government support and collaboration, Murang’a is set to witness an era of unprecedented growth and prosperity.
