Kipkorir Ngetich Condemns the Heckling of Raila Odinga in Kisii County, Calls for Unity and Respect for Democracy

Eldoret-based human rights activist Kipkorir Ngetich has strongly condemned the recent incident in Kisii County where opposition leader Raila Odinga was heckled by a group of individuals, terming it as "barbaric, primitive, and a high level of intolerance." In his statement, Ngetich expressed deep concern over what he called "political-sponsored goonism," which he believes has no place in a democratic nation like Kenya.

Ngetich stated that the political environment in Kenya has taken a dangerous turn, as some leaders have resorted to using violence and intimidation to undermine those they disagree with. He highlighted that Raila Odinga, a leader who has contributed significantly to the country’s democratic space, was subjected to public humiliation simply because of his decision to engage in unity talks with President William Ruto.

“It is a democratic right for the President and the Prime Minister to come together, and no one should be humiliated or disrespected for making such a choice. Raila Odinga is not just a village elder; he is a leader in his own right, and he has every right, within his party and in his capacity, to work with the President. Those against this unity are driven by hate, jealousy, and tribalism,” Ngetich said.

The activist expressed disappointment at the growing trend of political intolerance, especially by those in the opposition who, according to him, seem to be using primitive tactics and propaganda to discredit Raila Odinga’s collaboration with the President. “There are selfish individuals in the opposition who thought Raila would endorse them, and now, they are resorting to violence and propaganda to prove their relevance," he added.

Ngetich also emphasized that the incident in Kisii County was not a true reflection of the Gusii people, stating that the attackers were likely hired outsiders with an agenda to sow division between the Gusii and Luo communities, which have historically enjoyed good relations.

"The youth who participated in this attack are being manipulated by individuals who want to create division. The culture of treating certain leaders as favorites over others is dangerous and must be rejected in totality," Ngetich said.

The human rights activist further warned that the ongoing attempts to undermine Raila Odinga and prevent any positive moves towards national unity are a threat to the stability of the country. He also called on the security apparatus to take proactive steps in addressing areas prone to political chaos and arrest those behind such acts of violence before they escalate.

He also took issue with the misuse of social media, noting that it has become a platform for spreading hate, insults, and division, particularly among the youth. "Kenya is one of the worst countries where social media is used to propagate negativity. If left unchecked, this culture will result in a generation of individuals with rotten ethics and behavior," he warned.

Ngetich urged the youth to understand that political tolerance and respect for others' choices are key to the development of a harmonious society. He reminded them that one day, one of their own might hold the highest office in the land and will need unity, respect, and support.

In closing, Ngetich reiterated the importance of national unity, urging both President William Ruto and Raila Odinga to continue working together for the greater good of the country, despite the challenges posed by political opponents.

"Let us not be distracted by those who seek to undermine the unity of this great nation. Democracy thrives when we respect each other’s rights to make choices. The President’s call for unity is a call for prosperity, not selfish political gains," he concluded.
