KNCCI Enhances SME Export Capacity at AfCFTA Workshop in Mombasa

The Kenya National Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KNCCI) recently participated in an Export Logistics Workshop in Mombasa, aimed at strengthening the export capacity of Kenyan SMEs under the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA). The workshop provided critical insights and practical training to help businesses navigate the complexities of export logistics, enhancing their ability to expand into new markets.

Mr. Stephen Osedo, KNCCI’s Head of County and MSMEs, underscored the Chamber’s commitment to supporting SMEs through various initiatives. He highlighted the Jiinue Growth Programme, which offers both training and financial support to bolster the growth of SMEs in Kenya. Osedo also provided a comprehensive overview of the AfCFTA, explaining how the agreement presents significant opportunities to boost intra-African trade and open up new markets for Kenyan businesses.

The workshop, which attracted a wide range of SMEs, focused on equipping participants with essential knowledge on export logistics. Key areas covered included export regulations and processes, market opportunities within the AfCFTA framework, market entry strategies, and the essential export documentation required for successful trade. These included KRA PIN, valid commercial invoices, packing lists, export customs entries, airway bills, road consignment notes, and certificates of origin from KRA and KNCCI.

Attendees were also educated on how to leverage AfCFTA’s preferential market access and other opportunities for expansion, with the goal of enhancing the competitiveness of Kenyan SMEs in the African market.

The workshop was supported by the UK Government through the TradeMark East Africa under the REDIT programme, a partnership aimed at improving trade logistics and facilitating access to international markets for businesses in the region.

This initiative aligns with Kenya’s broader goals of promoting economic growth, fostering innovation, and enhancing the capacity of SMEs to compete on a regional and global scale, particularly in the context of the AfCFTA.

KNCCI’s continued efforts to support the export capabilities of SMEs are seen as vital in helping them tap into new market opportunities and contribute significantly to Kenya’s economic growth.
