KNQA Champions Recognition of Prior Learning as a Pathway to Economic and Social Empowerment

Naivasha, Kenya – The Kenya National Qualifications Authority (KNQA), under the leadership of Managing Director and CEO Dr. Alice Kande, has reaffirmed its commitment to transforming Kenya’s skills certification landscape through the Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) framework.

At a high-level forum held at Lake Naivasha Resort, key stakeholders convened to review the findings of a Tracer Study Report assessing the impact of RPL certification on employment, education, and personal development. The study provides critical insights into how RPL enhances economic opportunities, facilitates access to education, improves recruitment processes, and fosters personal empowerment and social mobility.

KNQA has been at the forefront of promoting alternative pathways to certification, ensuring that individuals who have acquired skills through informal learning, work experience, or apprenticeships receive formal recognition. The Authority has developed a structured framework that allows skilled workers to undergo assessment and obtain nationally recognized qualifications, bridging the gap between traditional education and industry demands.

Speaking at the event, Dr. Alice Kande emphasized the transformative potential of RPL in unlocking opportunities for millions of Kenyans, particularly those in the informal sector.

"Recognition of Prior Learning is not just about certification; it is about dignity, economic empowerment, and social mobility. We are committed to ensuring that every Kenyan, regardless of how they acquired their skills, has a fair chance to compete in the job market and pursue further education," Dr. Kande stated.

The forum brought together representatives from RPL assessment centers, RPL coordinators, and development partners, all of whom play a crucial role in the successful implementation of the framework. Discussions focused on economic impact, accessibility and affordability, industry collaboration, and education pathways. The Tracer Study Report is expected to guide policy adjustments and strategic interventions aimed at strengthening the RPL framework.

KNQA has outlined an ambitious roadmap to expand RPL across the country, with a focus on scaling up assessment centers, enhancing public awareness, and deepening industry partnerships. The Authority remains steadfast in its mission to ensure that skills, regardless of how they are acquired, are acknowledged, certified, and rewarded, ultimately contributing to Kenya’s economic growth and social development.
