Marching Against Kidney Cancer: Awareness, Prevention, and Hope

By John Kariuki

March is globally recognized as Kidney Cancer Awareness Month, a time dedicated to educating people about this life-threatening disease that affects thousands worldwide. Kidney cancer, also known as renal cell carcinoma, ranks among the top ten most common cancers. Unfortunately, it often remains undetected until it reaches an advanced stage, making awareness and early detection crucial in the fight against it.

Dr Catherine Nyongesa a renowned oncologist and Managing Director of the Texas Cancer Center:

Several factors contribute to the development of kidney cancer. Smoking, obesity, high blood pressure, and a family history of the disease are among the leading risk factors. Additionally, prolonged exposure to certain chemicals and an unhealthy diet can further increase the likelihood of developing the condition. Recognizing these risks is the first step toward prevention.

Early diagnosis significantly improves treatment outcomes. Symptoms such as blood in the urine, persistent lower back pain, unexplained weight loss, and fatigue should not be ignored. Regular medical check-ups, including imaging tests and urine analysis, can help detect kidney abnormalities before they progress into advanced stages.

A healthy lifestyle plays a crucial role in reducing the risk of kidney cancer. Quitting smoking, maintaining a balanced diet, staying physically active, and managing blood pressure can go a long way in preventing the disease. Moreover, for those already diagnosed, early intervention and proper medical care can improve survival rates.

This March, let’s come together to spread awareness about kidney cancer. By educating ourselves and others, we can promote early detection, support those affected, and encourage preventive measures. Every effort counts in the fight against kidney cancer—because awareness saves lives.
