In a heartfelt plea to the Cabinet Secretary for Education, Hon. Julius Migos, Moiben Member of Parliament Prof. Phylis Bartoo has called for the inclusion of schools in Karona Meibeki Ward in the list of beneficiaries of the enhanced hardship allowance for teachers. Prof. Bartoo highlighted the disparity in the distribution of the allowance, with some schools in Elgeyo-Marakwet and Eldoret Municipality, such as Eldoret Chebarus Primary School, being beneficiaries while schools in Karona Meibeki Ward have been left out.
In her statement, Prof. Bartoo expressed deep concern over the apparent inequities in the distribution of the enhanced hardship allowance, which was introduced to support educators working in challenging environments. These allowances are meant to help teachers in remote or underserved areas who face unique challenges in their daily work, ranging from inadequate infrastructure to limited access to essential services.
"The teachers in Karona Meibeki Ward, just like their counterparts in Elgeyo-Marakwet and some schools in Eldoret Municipality, are working in difficult circumstances. Their dedication to providing quality education under challenging conditions deserves recognition and support," said Prof. Bartoo. "It is therefore only fair and just that schools in Karona Meibeki Ward be considered for the enhanced hardship allowance."
Prof. Bartoo went on to emphasize that the teachers in the area, despite facing similar hardships as those in the already included regions, have been left out of this crucial allowance. She further pointed out that institutions like Eldoret Chebarus Primary School, which also face their own unique challenges, have been recognized, making the omission of Karona Meibeki Ward schools even more striking.
The Moiben MP noted that such disparities in the allocation of allowances can lead to feelings of neglect and discourage teachers from continuing to serve in areas that need their expertise the most. She called for an immediate review of the decision and for the inclusion of Karona Meibeki Ward schools in the next round of the enhanced hardship allowance disbursements.
"It is imperative that no teacher is left behind, and that all educators, regardless of their location, receive the recognition and support they deserve," Prof. Bartoo concluded.
The call from Moiben MP Prof. Phylis Bartoo is expected to gain traction, as it brings attention to the plight of teachers working in some of the most remote and underserved parts of Uasin Gishu County. As the Cabinet Secretary for Education considers the request, many hope that the government will take action to ensure equity in the distribution of hardship allowances across the country, fostering a more inclusive and supportive environment for teachers everywhere.
