Mosoriot Sub-County Hospital has achieved a major breakthrough in maternal and newborn care by successfully conducting its first-ever Caesarean section (C-section) procedure. This milestone, recorded on Tuesday, March 4th, signals a new era for the facility, which was recently upgraded to a Level 4 hospital and designated as the Chesumei Primary Care Network Hub.
The procedure was performed on a mother whose baby was in a breech position—a condition where the baby is positioned feet or buttocks first instead of the normal head-down position. Recognizing the need for specialized intervention, medical teams referred the patient from Chepterwai Hospital to Mosoriot for comprehensive obstetric care.
A highly skilled team, led by Dr. Kipletting and supported by Anaesthetist Koech and theatre nurses Peter and Lawrence, successfully carried out the surgery. Both the mother and her newborn baby boy are stable and recovering well in the hospital’s postnatal ward, a testament to the expertise and efficiency of the Mosoriot medical team.
The successful operation highlights the hospital’s growing capacity to provide Comprehensive Emergency Obstetric and Newborn Care (CEmONC), a critical service in reducing maternal and neonatal mortality. CEmONC services ensure that mothers facing complications during pregnancy and childbirth can receive timely surgical interventions, skilled care, and advanced neonatal support.
Previously, patients requiring emergency C-sections in the region had to be transferred to faraway facilities, increasing the risk of complications. With the hospital now equipped to handle such cases, expectant mothers can access life-saving procedures closer to home, reducing delays and improving outcomes for both mothers and babies.
Mosoriot Sub-County Hospital’s upgrade to a Level 4 facility has brought transformative changes, strengthening healthcare services for communities in Chesumei and neighboring sub-counties. The hospital continues to expand its capacity in surgery, maternity care, and general medical services, offering a lifeline to patients who previously had to seek specialized care elsewhere.
This milestone underscores the government’s commitment to improving maternal healthcare and strengthening healthcare networks across Nandi County. By equipping hospitals with the necessary infrastructure and skilled personnel, the county is moving closer to achieving universal health coverage.
