In a surprising turn of events, Kapseret Member of Parliament Oscar Kipchumba Sudi, along with the directors of Timba-XO Club, has decided to withdraw a criminal case against 16 Gen Z youth who had been charged with stealing and destroying property worth over Sh 150 million at the popular entertainment venue.
The youths, aged between 18 and 25, had been accused of causing significant damage to the club’s property, including the destruction of high-end equipment and theft of valuable assets in a series of incidents that took place earlier this year. The club, located in Uasin Gishu County, is known for hosting major events and attracting a youthful crowd, but the alleged incident led to widespread media coverage and public concern.
MP Sudi and the club's directors, they confirmed their decision to withdraw the charges, citing a desire to focus on reconciliation and the rehabilitation of the affected individuals rather than pursuing legal action. The statement emphasized the importance of second chances for the youth, with a clear commitment to supporting their rehabilitation and reintegration into society.
“We have taken this decision with the well-being of the youth in mind. While the damages to Timba-XO Club were considerable, we believe that offering these young people an opportunity for reform is more valuable than punitive measures. This is about creating pathways for redemption and understanding the root causes of their actions,” said MP Sudi in the statement.
Timba-XO Club's directors expressed gratitude for the decision, stressing the importance of fostering positive relationships with the community and youth in particular. They also thanked MP Sudi for his leadership in facilitating the resolution.
“We are committed to building a strong relationship with the youth in this region, and we believe this approach will help in addressing the underlying issues that led to the unfortunate events. We are looking forward to working with the youth to make them productive members of society,” said one of the club's directors.
The move to withdraw the case has sparked discussions on social media, with many praising the decision as a progressive step toward community-based justice and rehabilitation. It also highlights the growing emphasis on restorative justice approaches over punitive measures for young offenders.
