Mudavadi Assures Nubian Community on Land Ownership, Calls for Economic Empowerment

By John Kariuki

Prime Cabinet Secretary (PCS) and Cabinet Secretary for Foreign and Diaspora Affairs, Musalia Mudavadi, has reassured the Nubian community of the government's unwavering commitment to resolving their long-standing land concerns. Speaking at the Jamia Mosque in Kibera, where he joined the Muslim community for a Ramadan food distribution event, Mudavadi affirmed that the government is actively working to ensure the proper allocation and utilization of the 288-acre land designated for the Nubians.

"The 288 acres of land designated for the Nubian community is with the Kenyan government, and we are actively following up to ensure its proper allocation and utilization," he stated.

The event was organized by the Office of the Prime Cabinet Secretary in collaboration with the UAE Embassy to Kenya, led by Ambassador Dr. Salim Ibrahim Al Naqbi, and supported by the Kenya Red Cross. Mudavadi further encouraged the Nubian community to embrace President William Ruto’s Affordable Housing project as a means of securing dignified and habitable living spaces with essential social amenities.

Reacting to Mudavadi’s remarks, the Chief Executive Officer of the Nubian Rights Forum, Shafi Hussein, emphasized that the recognition of the Nubian people is long overdue. He proposed involving private developers in the 288-acre land to drive economic empowerment for the community.

"Nubian recognition is long overdue. On the 288-acre piece, we want to bring in a private developer to realize the community’s economic empowerment," Hussein noted.

If implemented transparently and inclusively, such a move could create job opportunities, improve housing, and uplift the community's overall economic status. However, concerns remain about ensuring that the Nubians remain the primary beneficiaries of any development.

Sheikh Ismail Mohammed Ibrahim, the Imam of the Jamia Mosque, expressed gratitude for the government’s continuous support of the Muslim community, particularly in upholding freedom of worship. The Chairman of the Supreme Council of Kenya Muslims (SUPKEM) echoed these sentiments, emphasizing that acts of kindness and solidarity strengthen national unity.

Commissioner of Revenue Allocation, Hadija Juma, appreciated the efforts of the Prime Cabinet Secretary’s office in facilitating the event and underscored the importance of women’s empowerment in society.

The event concluded with a message of national unity: "Kenya thrives when its people stand together. Through understanding, service, and shared values, the nation continues to build harmony, proving that unity is its greatest strength."

As the government, in partnership with the UAE Embassy, pledges further support to the Nubian community—including addressing mosque development and community welfare—the focus now shifts to ensuring that these commitments translate into tangible results. The resolution of the land issue will be a defining test of the government’s dedication to historical justice and equitable development.

While the government’s assurance is a step in the right direction, the Nubian community remains watchful. The challenge now lies in implementation—ensuring that bureaucratic hurdles do not delay land allocation and that development projects truly serve the interests of the community.

For the Nubians, this moment represents both hope and vigilance. The promise of rightful land ownership and economic empowerment is within reach, but it will require sustained advocacy, transparency, and government accountability to turn this vision into reality.
