Mwamba Water Project: A Game-Changer for Water Access in Flocca, Uasin Gishu

By Jael Maritim

The County Government of Uasin Gishu has successfully completed the Mwamba Water Project in Kapkures, Soy Sub-County, marking a significant milestone in its commitment to improving local infrastructure under the Financing Locally-Led Climate Action (FLLoCA) Program. The project, aimed at enhancing water access for local residents, has introduced critical improvements to the Mwamba water spring, significantly benefiting the community.

Led by Eng. Christopher Mbevi, the Climate Change Unit Officer for Soy Sub-County, alongside Soy Water Engineer Benadys Chelagat and Design Engineer Celestine Kigen, the project has fully met its objectives. The scope of work included the construction of a robust masonry sump tank with a 50,000-liter capacity, the fencing of the spring to safeguard the water source, and the establishment of two community water points. Additionally, a cattle water trough was built, and indigenous trees were planted around the spring to help protect the area and maintain its ecological integrity.

The local community has actively engaged in ensuring the success of the project. The fencing has already been completed, and the sump tank is now fully operational. The community has also taken it upon themselves to care for the newly planted indigenous trees, with one member designated to water the plants daily, especially during the dry season.

Residents, who have been closely monitoring the final stages of construction, have expressed their gratitude for the 50,000-liter water tank and commended the high-quality workmanship involved.

Eng. Mbevi, during a recent inspection of the project, lauded the implementation of the works, emphasizing the importance of sustaining the spring for future generations. "The project has been executed excellently, and we now urge the community to protect the spring and ensure its long-term sustainability," he said.

He also highlighted the far-reaching impact of the project, noting that it will serve as a catalyst for further development in the area, enhancing both the quality of life and the overall well-being of residents. With the success of the Mwamba Water Project, the County Government of Uasin Gishu is poised to continue its efforts in fostering sustainable local development through community-driven initiatives.
