Nairobi Governor Sakaja Johnson's school feeding programme has added chapati on top of the Dishi na County meals after the governor suggested to the president to help him purchase the roti-making machine.
On Thursday, during his fourth day of the development tour in Nairobi, the head of state, alongside Governor Sakaja Johnson, for the first time served chapati to Ayany primary school children, marking a milestone towards enhancing balanced diet and addressing food security among school-going children.
This follows President Ruto's pledge during his development tour in Mathare, to buy a chapati-making machine to boost in the mass production of the fancy flatbread for public school children benefiting from Sakaja's school feeding program - Dishi Na County.
Sakaja had asked Ruto to help him purchase a chapati-making machine that could produce as many chapatis as possible to boost the city’s ‘Dishi Na County’ school feeding program - this is after he had asked the students what they would like.
"In the Dishi Na County programme, we are feeding over 300,000 children in Nairobi; that means we need a machine to produce as many chapatis as possible every day." Sakaja said.
President Ruto assented to the governor's appeal and promised to acquire the machine to enhance balanced diet meals to children.
"I have agreed to buy a chapati-making machine. Governor, your work is now finding where to buy it" President Ruto agreed.
Sakaja's Dishi Na County programme benefits over public schools in Nairobi, with each child paying a nominal fee of ksh5 only per plate.
