National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetangula has extended his heartfelt condolences to the family of the late former IEBC Chairman, Wafula Chebukati, during a visit to their rural home in Kitale, TransNzoia County. Chebukati, a distinguished public servant and a respected figure in Kenya's electoral system, passed away recently, leaving the nation in mourning.
Accompanied by family members and close associates, Wetangula expressed his deepest sympathies to Chebukati’s widow, Mama Mary Wanyonyi, and the entire family. "I joined the family today to once again extend my heartfelt condolences," Wetangula said. "As they mourn this remarkable man, a dedicated public servant, I call on all Kenyans to keep them in their prayers during this grieving moment."
In his tribute, Wetangula reflected on Chebukati's legacy, acknowledging his significant contribution to Kenya’s electoral processes. "The country mourns a leader who upheld respect and dignity in the conduct of his duties," he said. "His ability to manage the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) with strict adherence to the law earned him admiration not only within Kenya but internationally."
Wetangula noted that Chebukati's exemplary leadership in managing Kenya's elections earned him invitations from other countries, who sought to learn from his expertise in running an effective and impartial electoral body. "His work transcended borders, and his knowledge was highly sought after by other nations wishing to establish or improve their electoral systems."
The Speaker also paid tribute to Chebukati’s integrity and professionalism within the legal community, highlighting his role as a mentor to many. "The legal fraternity has lost an honest, transparent, and hardworking advocate. He was not just a leader, but a mentor to many, who looked up to him for guidance and inspiration."
Wetangula called on Kenyans to come together in honoring Chebukati’s memory and legacy. "I urge Kenyans to turn up in large numbers to join leaders, led by President H.E. Dr. William Ruto, in bidding farewell to Mr. Wafula Chebukati," he stated. "His legacy will continue to inspire generations to come."
As the country prepares for the final farewell to the late IEBC Chairman, Wetangula’s call for unity and support reflects the deep respect and admiration that Chebukati earned throughout his career. His dedication to ensuring the integrity of Kenya’s electoral process will be remembered as a cornerstone of his public service.
