NEMA Welcomes Cabinet's Historic Move to Ban Asbestos in Kenya

The National Environment Management Authority (NEMA), under the leadership of Managing Director Mamo B. Mamo, has expressed strong support for the Cabinet's recent decision to implement a nationwide ban on asbestos. This bold step is part of a broader initiative to safeguard public health and protect citizens from the dangerous health risks associated with asbestos exposure.

In a statement, Mr. Mamo praised the Cabinet's directive, calling it a progressive move that would protect Kenyans from the carcinogenic dangers of asbestos. The decision comes as part of an ambitious nationwide asbestos removal program that will target all public and private facilities across the country, including government buildings, schools, hospitals, and water supply systems.

Asbestos, a material once commonly used in Kenya’s construction industry during the 1960s and 1970s, has long been linked to serious health problems. Classified as a human carcinogen, it poses a significant risk of lung cancer, mesothelioma (a cancer that affects the lining of the lungs, heart, and abdomen), and other severe respiratory conditions. Despite its known dangers, asbestos remains present in many buildings and infrastructure in Kenya, posing a potential health threat to thousands of people.

The Cabinet’s decision to phase out and safely remove asbestos from all public and private buildings is a critical step toward reducing these health risks. The nationwide initiative aims to ensure that communities across the country are no longer exposed to this hazardous material.

"This move reinforces the government's commitment to creating safer, healthier environments for all Kenyans,” Mr. Mamo emphasized. “It is a significant milestone in our ongoing efforts to protect public health and the environment from harmful substances."

The nationwide asbestos removal initiative will be rolled out in phases, with priority given to schools, hospitals, and other critical public infrastructure. The initiative will involve comprehensive assessments of buildings, removal of asbestos-containing materials, and the safe disposal of hazardous waste to ensure that no further exposure to asbestos occurs.

As the country moves forward with this bold initiative, the government, along with NEMA, is committed to working closely with health experts and stakeholders to ensure the successful and safe implementation of the asbestos removal program. This proactive approach is expected to significantly reduce the risks of asbestos-related diseases, ultimately contributing to a healthier and safer future for all Kenyans.
