Four specialist officers from the National Police Service (NPS) were today briefed by the Inspector General’s Principal Assistant, Mr. Mathew Kutoh, ahead of their deployment to the United Nations Peacekeeping Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS). The officers, who form part of the Specialised Police Team’s Anti-Cattle Raiding Component, will serve for a 12-month period, contributing to regional security and stability in South Sudan.
Mr. Kutoh, representing the Inspector General of Police, Mr. Douglas Kanja, addressed the officers during the briefing, urging them to uphold the highest standards of discipline, integrity, and professionalism throughout their mission. He stressed the critical role they will play as ambassadors of Kenya and emphasized the importance of maintaining discipline, fostering teamwork, and strictly adhering to United Nations regulations to ensure the success of the mission.
"Your deployment is a reflection of Kenya’s commitment to global peace and security," Mr. Kutoh said. "We trust that you will perform your duties with the highest level of professionalism, ensuring that the mission contributes positively to the peace efforts in South Sudan."
The officers, drawn from the Kenya Police Service (KPS), Administration Police Service (APS), and Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), will work under the command of Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Mr. Kioko Munyambu. Their duties will focus on specialized peacekeeping efforts, specifically tackling the issue of cattle raiding, a major source of conflict in the region, and supporting broader peace initiatives aligned with international policing standards.
Mr. Kutoh also reminded the officers that their success will not only contribute to peace in South Sudan but also reinforce Kenya’s active role in maintaining regional security. "Kenya is a proud contributor to peacekeeping missions, and your service will further strengthen our country's reputation in global peace initiatives," he added.
Also present at the briefing was the NPS Staff Officer for Peace Support Operations, Mr. Albert Masese, CP, who expressed confidence in the officers’ ability to perform their mission effectively.
The NPS continues to play a pivotal role in supporting regional and global peacekeeping efforts, with the deployment to South Sudan reinforcing Kenya’s ongoing commitment to maintaining peace and stability in conflict-prone areas across Africa.
